The Legendary Oberheim Analogue Sound

The original Oberheim Matrix-12 earned its reputation through its enormous sonic flexibility and unmistakable analogue character. Used by artists including Vangelis, Depeche Mode and The Orb, it became particularly well known for its lush pads, sweeping filters, deep basses and complex evolving sounds.

GForce has worked closely with Oberheim and Marcus Ryle to recreate the original instrument's oscillators, filters and envelope behaviour. The result is a software synthesizer that retains the distinctive sound and architecture of the hardware while introducing a much more accessible programming experience.

12 Voices, Dual Oscillators and a 15-Mode Filter

At the heart of the GForce Oberheim Matrix-12 is a 12-voice synthesis engine, with two modelled voltage-controlled oscillators per voice.

Each voice offers triangle, sawtooth and pulse waveforms, with additional noise and hard sync capabilities on the second oscillator. Oscillator FM adds further sound design possibilities, from metallic textures to more complex harmonic sounds.

The oscillators feed into the Matrix-12's renowned 15-mode filter, offering a wide selection of responses including one-to-four pole low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch, phase and combined filter modes.

Two VCAs in series complete the signal path, providing the foundation for everything from traditional analogue synthesizer sounds to intricate, heavily modulated patches.

Powerful Matrix Modulation Made Easy

The Matrix-12's modulation system was one of the defining features of the original hardware, allowing an extraordinary range of connections between modulation sources and synthesis parameters.

GForce has preserved this flexibility while making it considerably easier to use. Simply drag a modulation source onto a parameter to create an assignment, with visual feedback showing how the sound will respond.

Each voice includes five envelopes, five LFOs, four ramps, three trackers, a lag processor and dedicated vibrato, alongside performance sources such as velocity, pressure, pitch bend and modulation wheel.

Up to six bipolar modulation assignments can be applied to each parameter, complete with quantisation options. Modulation sources can even be routed back to themselves, opening up a huge range of experimental sound design possibilities.

One of the biggest improvements over the original hardware is the ability to see exactly what is happening inside a patch.

The interactive Flow view displays a live diagram of each voice, showing the audio signal path and connected modulation sources. Selecting a control highlights its connections, making even complicated patches easier to understand.

The dedicated Mod Matrix presents every modulation assignment in a sortable, filterable grid, allowing you to review and edit connections from one place.

Additional visualisers provide useful feedback for oscillators, filters, envelopes and other synthesis modules, with graphical controls that can be adjusted directly.

Six Keyboard Zones and Multi-Timbral Performance

The GForce Oberheim Matrix-12 offers both Single and Multi modes, giving you flexibility for traditional synthesizer playing and more elaborate layered performances.

Single mode uses the 12 voices as one instrument, with polyphony, unison, detune and spread controls.

Multi mode allows individual voices to use different sounds, with six overlapping keyboard zones. Each zone offers its own voice allocation, MIDI channel and micro arpeggiator, making it possible to create complex splits, layered textures and rhythmic arrangements.

Individual voices can be loaded, copied, locked, disabled or edited, while Relative Edit allows you to adjust an entire zone together.
